5 Things You Need for a Mexico Destination Wedding

by Denise Canon on December 10, 2009

The popularity of destination weddings in Mexico has caught the attention of the government. Typically, residency requirements for the bride, groom and witnesses include a 2-4 day stay prior the wedding ceremony and the variable of specific number of days differs from state to state. I have just returned from a LOVE MEXICO conference in the Riviera Maya, and had the opportunity to learn firsthand that you can now be married the same day of arrival – providing that all legal documents are in order! This is a HUGE change – which means that impromptu romantics do not need to wait to tie the knot!

Add the following FIVE ITEMS to your check list as you prepare for YOUR destination wedding in Mexico:

• Complete necessary documentation and submit to the civil justice for processing.

• Required documents: copies of passports, birth certificates, tourist cards (you receive a tourist card upon arrival in Mexico).

• Four witnesses are required (you can provide or the judge will provide for you).

• Blood tests are required. While these have always taken place in Mexico, NOW another option is available: the couple can have the blood tests done by their own physician. If you choose to do this, it must be submitted within 15 days of the wedding ceremony – and MUST be translated into Spanish. Perhaps not the most convenient situation overall, but another option.

• Civil ceremonies can now be accommodated 7 days a week, 365 days a year – including Mexican holidays – this is NEW!
