SOLO FEMALE TRAVELERS: SAFETY TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

by Denise Canon on August 27, 2010

The numbers are staggering – over 30 million American women travel independently, and as this trend of single-woman travel grow, there are numerous resources to meet the demand.  Airlines, tour operators, travel companies are catering to this dynamic, adventurous female on the go!

Though women still need to take the necessary precautions and be aware of the cultural norms when traveling abroad, there are many fabulous perks to hitting the road alone.

Below are tips to make YOUR solo travel experience safe and rewarding.

BEFORE YOU GO

Take the time to learn about the destination:   geographical and historical lie of the land, be aware of the country’s cultural and artistic events and enrich your experience knowing important local phrases. Your research should include particular cultural norms and belief systems, specifically those pertaining to women.

Find an expert with advice on travel to your specific destination(s).  Women love sharing their experiences with other women.  Reach out to your sister traveler and/or blogger.  WorldHum is the perfect site to learn more from featured travel writers and travel bloggers.

Pack lightly; less is best.  Your mobility increases, and the opportunity of becoming a target for thieves or pickpockets diminishes.

ARRIVING AT YOUR DESTINATION

Become familiar with the local American consulate.  In the event of an emergency from family to you, or to your family – you need to know where to go for assistance.

Your cell phone can be your best friend when traveling solo. You need the dependability of its functionality when you’re away from home.  Obtain global service through your provider, or make arrangements to obtain an international phone. Or, if you will be traveling for an extended period of time, having an unlocked GSM cell phone with a local, prepaid SIM card is the perfect option.

Cash is important to have on hand; a money belt is indispensable. Be aware of your surroundings when visiting an ATM.

Be aware of your surroundings.  Whether walking around a city, hiking trails or taking a taxi from point A to B, take the time to write down the specifics (name of your hotel, notable landmarks, taxi number, and license plate). Always agree on a taxi fare before you begin your travels, make sure you have the correct currency and avoid traveling during the late evening hours.

Traveling solo will provide many entertaining and spiritual experiences. Maintain periodic contact with family or friends, perhaps blog about your experiences.  The world is your audience!

STAY SAFE

Choose centrally located hotels that are busy.  It provides you the opportunity to seem less conspicuous as a solo traveler, and allows you to meet new faces.

Travel during the daytime hours; plan your arrivals into a foreign country during the morning.  Be confident, know where you are going.  Your attitude will carry you safely into new adventures ~ wild and mild.

As a solo woman traveler, no matter where or how you travel, what you know for sure: your intuition is your guide, your wits are your friends and adventure is a mere part of your JOURNEY!
